Endless Exploration

Uncategorized Jan 02, 2021

In my Togakure Ryu leadership class Mark was discussing how he studied ninpo and suggested we do the same.

Whether it is a phrase like Shikin Harimitsu Daikomyo or a kata, first break it down, take each single piece research and train it. Mentally and physically training each part. Then when you have a better understanding of each part put it back together and research and train it as one. Then wear it for a while, a long while, until you can understand the concept or principle so it's more a part of you.

At this point start to explore how to transcend the principle for physical confrontation to use it for a verbal or spiritual confrontation.

Even after all that remember there is always more to learn. How would that principle look if a weapon, or two weapons, limited space, more attackers, in a chair….. You get the idea there is always more to learn.
There is no end of learning these techniques.

Which is both the most exciting thing about this art and in the beginning this...

Questions Are The Answer Part 3

The Wonder Of A Child

Are you happy where you are? Are you set with what you know? Is there more you want to learn or have you comfortably settled in wrapped in your habitual predictions?

There is a Japanese concept called Shoshin with a meaning of "beginner's mind." It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, even when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner would. Like the wonder of a child exploring the world around them.

If you want to learn, if you want to change who you are and how you feel about yourself and the world around you, it starts with questions.

You have to question what you think you know. You have to question what you base your habitual predictions on. You have to have the wonder of a child.

At Shinobi Science we use the questions of our martial ancestors combined with those of modern science to give you the tools necessary to get the answers for your questions.

If you have questions about...

The World Doesn’t Revolve Around You

Let’s look at another example of predictions and data and how far some will go to ignore the data. For this we once again go back to Aristotle and his geocentric model of the universe revolving around the earth. This model lasted for more than a thousand years until Copernicus.

Copernicus was a Polish astronomer and priest who in 1515 questioned this geocentric view and proposed that the earth was just another planet revolving around the sun. He didn’t publish his theory until 1543 and it wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms. In fact Italian scientist Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for teaching, among other heretical ideas, Copernicus’ heliocentric view of the Universe.

It wasn’t until Galileo used his telescope in 1610 that the evidence tipped to support Copernicus. Even with this there were still those who didn’t want to accept the new data. Galileo wasn’t killed but he was tried for...

"Abby...someone. Abby Normal"

I’ve been reading over the holiday break which, as my students know, means I have new ideas of how to explain what we’re doing in Shinobi Science. What’s new in neuroscience has been the focus this time and it is not normal.

Most people have heard of the concept of the Lizard brain. It’s part of the triune brain model, which consists of the lizard brain, the limbic brain, and the cortex. The idea behind this is that our base instincts are part of the older lizard brain, that then lead to the limbic brain and our emotions and finally to the cortex and reason.

While this model was created in the 1960s the idea behind it goes back to the ancient Greeks and Aristotle’s three concepts of human will, emotion and reason. Putting humans at the top of the brain ladder if you will. The problem with this theory is that it’s wrong. Modern neuroscience has shown that lizard’s have cortex brains and that there is no one...

Last Monday Of 2020

It’s the last week of 2020 and many will be glad to see it go. However remember Monday, December, and 2020 are all constructs of our minds. They don’t really exist.

The ninja knew that all we really have is now, this moment. Their training taught them how to stay focussed in the moment to be safe and happy. Today we continue these lessons in the Shinobi Science Online Training Community. We strive to be prepared for whatever comes and live safe and happy.

We welcome you to join us by finding out more about Shinobi Science, just click on the link below.

Enjoy The Moment

Uncategorized Dec 28, 2020

One of my Training partners left for the Bahamas with his family yesterday. Later in the day a group of us get a picture of a Cadillac and a message saying livin the Cadillac dream. It also stated that the test results were not back in time for them to go to the Bahamas so they were staying in Florida. The next text we receive from him states Florida never fails to impress it is beautiful.

He didn’t waste time being upset admonishing himself and family for not getting tested sooner, so they could have gone to the Bahamas. They didn't waste time lamenting the missed trip and that they were stuck in Florida. They chose to celebrate that they are in Florida. Take advantage of the beautiful surroundings and to enjoy a wonderful vacation.

What does this have to do with training? Everything. They did what was appropriate in the moment to enjoy what was happening in reality. They could have chosen to focus on the missed trip and the fun they would have had in the Bahamas and been...

A Safe Space

I decided to come to the dojo today. Both Mark and Dennis have asked me to read certain books. I know I will be able to focus on what I am reading and studying better here. Neither the cat or dog will be vying for my attention or food. I can’t distract myself by deciding I should clean house, bake something, read one of the other books I have already started or most likely start a new puzzle.

Here it is quiet. Here I am used to training, studying and learning the art. Here I work to introduce and increase understanding in this art for others. Here I am safe to explore.

This is what we have strived to create online at Shinobi Science for those who can’t join us at the dojo.

At Shinobi Science you learn the Shinobi formula so you can understand the art better. The formula gives you a way to study the art to give you a greater understanding of what you need to be happy, healthy and safe. You learn to question and experiment gaining answers to what keeps you safer, healthier...

Today some of you may hear peace on earth sung by Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Others may hear Luke 2:14 read to them at their church. Or maybe you received a holiday card wishing you peace on earth.

The definition of peace is:

  1. (noun) the state prevailing during the absence of war
  2. (noun) the general security of public places
  3. (noun) the absence of mental stress or anxiety

We all want peace but it seems we’re lacking on how to get there. The ninja believed the path to peace started with the third definition. Peace between people and nations is only possible when we find peace in each of our minds.

They practiced something called Goshinbo which is a way of using awareness of your thoughts, words and actions to achieve peace of mind and ultimately happiness. We continue to teach and practice these techniques combined with modern neuroscience to make them more accessible. If you would like to find out more about achieving peace of mind click the link below.

Until then...

Safe Journeys

Uncategorized Dec 24, 2020

This is a holiday and celebratory time of the year for almost everyone. This year for many of us it is very different. We are not getting together with as many family and friends as usual, or not getting together with anyone. For me Christmas day usually starts with sticky buns and family. This year is different. It will be zoom calls, favorite movies and popcorn yum! And yes a walk with Ms. Moxie, my dog.

However many are still traveling and getting together with family and friends. The important thing is to stay connected and informed about the travel conditions and ways to keep yourself and loved ones safe. To do what is best, safe and comfortable for you and those you gather with.

In other words as we say here at Shinobi Science what is appropriate for the moment to keep you safe and get you home to those you love and who love you.

If you would like to train and learn more about how to be safe during your journeys of any type, please click the link below.

Happy Holidays to all,...

Getting Through To The IRS

Uncategorized Dec 23, 2020

I needed to get my snow tires put on my car and the only time the garage had for me was Wednesday the day before the storm and only if I dropped off the car at 7am so they could work it in at some point that day. The garage is about a mile down the road from the dojo so I scheduled it. Wednesday comes and it is 18 degrees outside and the wind is blowing. At seven in the morning I hand them my keys and start walking toward the dojo.

The dojo is on route 125 in Plaistow. Picture a divided stripmall street. So I’m walking along the side trying to keep warm as the “feels like 5 degrees” winds are blowing and cars are zipping past me. But I make it to the dojo, invigorated and all proud of myself.

At some point I decided to check the mail. Now for this part you have to go back to yesterday’s post to get the back story but to speed this story up I needed to call the IRS. First three calls the answering machine tells me they’re so busy I can’t even hold,...
