Shinobi Covid Update

Uncategorized Apr 13, 2021

Dennis and I got our second shot today. A HUGE Thank You to the men and women of the National Guard and the New Hampshire Fire and Rescue Departments. They have a smooth efficient system for vaccination.

Two weeks from today we will be considered fully vaccinated. We will be figuring out in the next couple of weeks the procedure for opening to classes inside the dojo.

If you are getting the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine two weeks after your second shot you are considered fully vaccinated. If you got the Johnson and Johnson vaccine (before it was taken off the market ) it is five weeks after the shot that you are considered fully vaccinated.

We look forward to seeing you at the dojo soon.

More Than A Hobby

Uncategorized Apr 12, 2021

I have met some of the funniest, crazy, talented and dangerous people while learning and studying the art of ninpo. These people are my training partners, friends and teachers. We help each other train online, in the dojo, or outside. Training to us is not just something you do during class, it becomes part of who you are. We incorporate it into all aspects of our life.

Those of you that read our posts know how much this art means to us. You understand how this art enriches our lives. Each moment of training, be it our thoughts, words or actions is a potential moment of greater understanding of ourselves and the world we live in. It is a moment to connect to a greater understanding of how to live safer and happier.

We look forward to training with you.

It’s All About You

Uncategorized Apr 09, 2021

Shinobi Science is all about you. It’s a learning methodologie to learn ninjutsu. It’s a scientific process to experiment with the principles found in kata models regardless of which ones you use. This is possible because the Shinobi Formula is an equation or more accurately a process that represents ninpo taijutsu the ninja body movements.

It doesn’t teach a curriculum, it teaches how to train, learn and explore the martial arts. How to move in gravity, how to unify your body to become its most effective weapon. It doesn’t matter if you train in the Bujinkan, Genbukan, Jinenkan, Myofu-An, To-Shin Do or any of the other ninja martial arts Shinobi Science makes it easier for you to unlock the secrets and principles of the art you study.

We look forward to training with you.

Want To Escape

Uncategorized Apr 08, 2021

Today we took a break from the study of Chi Kung in Ninja Lab and started our exploration of Santo Tonko kata in Ninja Lab. Santo Tonko kata is a collection of practice forms that teach escaping. There are twelve.

The one most people know is when two people face each other grasping forearms and one person pulls the other person along with one or more shuffle steps. Knowing the principle of Santo Tonko kata Dennis didn’t use any of the twelve. We used a straight punch and stab to train the kata.

We started by examining the interaction and what was happening on either side of the kata. Both people needed to start in gravity. One was punching with the goal of striking through their surface to reach the bone structure. The other was focused on the person, not the punch, while moving just out of reach of it. Some people call it riding the energy of the punch.

Then we looked at the perceptions on each side of the interaction. What did each person perceive during this exchange about...

I Always

Uncategorized Apr 07, 2021

I always vote this way. We always order this food. We’re a grappling school. I’m good at punching. We always use this service. All of these could be considered preferences or specialities but from a ninjutsu perspective they are all attempts to have an answer before you know the question.

One of the greatest lessons I got from my teacher Mark Davis years ago was one of the most difficult to do but has given me the most benefit. Back then he told me that I was at a point in my training where I needed to give up being good and learn to be appropriate for the moment. I was confused and asked why I didn’t want to be ‘good’. He simply said what if your good isn’t good enough.

I’m often asked by friends what I would do in a given situation and I answer I don’t know. Because of my training I know I’ll do something but until the situation happens I won’t know how to respond. I try to treat people and problems the same way. I want...

Hectic Monday

Uncategorized Apr 05, 2021

It’s a hectic Monday here at the dojo. There is a new business moving in upstairs above us. There are plumbing renovations that are needed before it can open. This involves not only much noise above us, as some of you have heard during classes but accessing the pipes through our ceiling.

Of course the place in the ceiling where they have to access the pipes is where our heavy bag and other equipment is and the office. So the Bear moved everything to the opposite side of the room and we are packing up to leave.

Lucky for us we gained a few hours of office time because the access points the plumber had put in the walls to do the work needed today were filled in over the weekend. So he had to redo them, which gave us a little time at the dojo this morning.

This morning gave us another chance to work on staying in the moment and doing that which is appropriate at the time. Working on our thoughts, words and actions we stayed our usual sarcastic sleeves and did what needed to be...

Enjoy Your Day!!

Uncategorized Apr 04, 2021

Went for a walk with Moxie this morning and again this afternoon. It’s such a beautiful day.  Here it is a time of new growth and birth. Animals making homes and giving birth, birds migrating to nesting grounds, plants blooming. Spring is here and nature is waking up from the quiet slumber of winter.

If you have been following our posts you know how much I enjoy the winter, What I really enjoy is being in nature. Each season has its own gifts and treasures to discover, learn and savor.

It is another way of training being in nature and connecting with it. To be present and experience each season in all the wonder it has to offer. We don’t train just to prevent violence we train to be aware in the moment to enjoy life.

There are many gifts from training but I think the greatest is being aware of our thoughts, words and actions so we actively choose those which lead us to a safer and happier life.

So wherever you are and whatever you are doing, enjoy...

Saturday Ninja Lab

Uncategorized Apr 03, 2021

The last two weeks we have been studying Iron Shirt Chi Kung in Ninja Lab. This morning we took those experimental results and added them into training. We started by off balancing each other in a rear or a front hip throw.

From our compromised position we practiced finding gravity, then finding balance and finding power.
At first we did this in a step by step process slowly regaining our balance and taking their balance. As we trained the pauses between each step lessened until it was all done in one moment.

It was amazing how fast we reversed our compromised position to being in control. This is the essence of why we train, to take a compromised situation and turn it around so we are safe.

We look forward to training with you.

To Fight Or Not To Fight

Uncategorized Mar 31, 2021

Though we study the art of war, we do so not to fight. We train so that when something chaotic happens we can steer it toward a peaceful resolution. We do this by understanding the art of conflict to resolve it in the safest way possible for all. Using violence or fighting is the last resort we seek as a solution.

We do not engage in fighting to prove ourselves or to stoke our ego. We do not fight to win honor. We are not competitive in our fighting and training. We do not do this to get in shape or for sport.

We fight to protect family, friends and ourselves. We fight for those who face injustice or can not fight to protect themselves. We learn to fight to end dangerous, harmful, violent, unjust conflicts. We fight to go home. We fight to survive.

This doesn’t mean we can’t fight. If we decide it is necessary to do so we are not restricted by any rules or codes of what is just other than our own moral compass. We will do whatever is needed with what is appropriate to end...
